Twitter For iPad Launches: Official App Debuts In Apple Store

Twitter for iPad is now live in the App Store, Twitter announced in a tweet at midnight Eastern Time this morning, Sept. 2, 2010.

Twitter wrote in a blog post:

Today we are bringing Tweets to a device that really lets content shine – the iPad. Twitter for iPad takes advantage of the iPad’s fluid touch interface, letting you move lots of information around smoothly and quickly – without needing to open and close windows or click buttons.

TechCrunch praised Twitter for iPad, saying it created “an amazing user experience for reading information” through layers and gestures, and even beats rival iPad apps for news like Flipboard and Pulse.

Other highlights for the app include window panes, easily-viewable media, and no need to login.

Collaborating on the project were Twitter Mobile Designer Bryan Haggerty (@bhaggs), UI Designer Leland Rechis (@leland), and Developer Loren Brichter (@lorenb). Brichter’s popular iPhone app Tweetie was acquired by Twitter and renamed “Twitter for iPhone,” which served as part of the inspiration for the iPad version.

Jon Gosselin To Kate: Give Me $50K Or I’ll Report You To Child Services, Says Ex

UPDATE: Hailey has responded to Jon’s accusation that she is lying.

“Look, the documents and the evidence speak for itself,” she told Radar.

Jon declined to comment on the story before it was published, Radar reports.

PREVIOUSLY: Jon Gosselin allegedly threatened to report ex-wife Kate to Child Protective Services if she pay him off, Radaronline.com reports.

Jon’s ex-girlfriend, Hailey Glassman, tells Radar that Jon tried to extort Kate when their daughter Mady hurt her arm. Jon planned to tell CPS that Kate had caused the injury by yanking on Mady’s arm.

“We were in bed and Jon called Kate on speaker phone,” Hailey said. “He wrote down what he wanted to say to her and then he read from his notes. He told her, ‘You either give me money, or I’m going to call CPS.'”

Hailey provided Radar with handwritten notes, allegedly from Jon, that support her story. The notes (see part of one below, click here for the rest) say things like “Need 50k or 100k now. 24/48 hours go to DA” and “Jon giving Kate ultimatums. He privately extorts Kate. If you don’t do what I want, I’ll do this…”

“He always referred to himself in the third person,” Hailey said. “I found it so strange. It was almost like he thought he was still on camera.”

Jon took to Twitter Wednesday to deny Hailey’s claims.

“Radaronline has been duped again by Hailey Glassman, who is apparently without a job and desperate for money,” he wrote. “This article contains so many lies, they are too numerous to count. It is completely false and without any merit.”

Philip Goldberg: Julia the Hindu, and the Pray in Eat Pray Love

It may surprise some people, the young in particular, but Julia Roberts is not the first big-time celeb to embrace elements of Hinduism and, as a result, inadvertently educate vast numbers of people about the tradition. And Elizabeth Gilbert is not the first author to write about a personal transformation resulting from time in an ashram and the practice of yogic disciplines. Nor is Eat Pray Love the first film to depict India’s primary religious tradition in a positive way (a group that does not include The Love Guru).

The list of famous folks drawn to Indian-style spirituality goes back to the days when no one had seen a photograph, much less a moving picture. In the 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson, a literary superstar in the days of the Lyceum Circuit, was deeply indebted to the Hindoo (that’s how they spelled it then) texts that sailed into Boston Harbor from Europe. So was Emerson’s acolyte, Henry David Thoreau, who rhapsodized about the Bhagavad Gita in Walden. Beginning in the 1920s, Paramahansa Yogananda — a celebrity in his own right after the publication, in 1946, of his Autobiography of a Yogi — attracted students like the composer Leopold Stokowski, the scientist Luther Burbank and the reclusive actress Greta Garbo. Long before Sting and Madonna posed in yoga postures, the gossip pages linked stars such as Gloria Swanson, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe to various Yoga teachers. Marilyn, Walter Winchell reported, took up Yoga “to improve her legs,” but some of her fans who followed her lead no doubt discovered more profound uses for the discipline.

In the 50s and 60s, musical celebrities like violinist Yehudi Menuhin, jazz legend John Coltrane, and, of course, George Harrison, linked up with Ravi Shankar and turned on their fans to the spiritual tradition than underlies Indian classical music. Then came the mother of all spiritual media frenzies, when the Beatles, Donovan and Mia Farrow made their way to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram on the Ganges. Celebrity links to Hindu-derived teachings continued to crop up on a regular basis, from Mary Tyler Moore, the 1970s version of America’s sweetheart (who endorsed Transcendental Meditation on national TV) to today’s sweetheart, Julia.

As for Elizabeth Gilbert, she is the latest in a long line of authors whose personal quests inspired literature that brought Eastern ideas to large numbers of readers. Emerson and Thoreau were the group’s progenitors, and later memoirists and essayists took up the mantle: the British adventurer Paul Brunton; the American yogi Theos Bernard; the Catholic mystic Thomas Merton; the British expatriots Christopher Isherwood, Gerald Heard and Aldous Huxley; the psychologist Richard Alpert, who metamorphosed from Timothy Leary’s psychedelic sidekick to Ram Dass after meeting Neem Karoli Baba, the very guru whose photograph reportedly inspired Ms. Roberts to explore Hinduism; and, in the 1980s, Shirley MacLaine whose Out on a Limb sold a zillion copies and was made into a TV movie. Other authors–Hermann Hesse, Somerset Maugham, J.D. Salinger chief among them–converted their explorations into fiction that turned many a reader toward India. T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats and others did it in verse. And now the film version of Eat Pray Love joins a cinematic tradition that includes two adaptations of Maugham’s The Razor’s Edge, Louis Malle’s Phantom India, several Merchant-Ivory films, Satyajit Ray’s magnificent Apu Trilogy and, of course, Gandhi, 1982’s Best Picture of the Year.

Artistic merit aside — Gilbert is not Salinger and the movie version of her memoir is to the Apu Trilogy what Britney is to Bach — the point is that once again the powerful forces of celebrity and popular culture have thrust India’s Vedic heritage into the spotlight. All the media attention inspires some to cynicism and others to a genuine spiritual enquiry. On the whole, we are better for it, because the key ideas that get transmitted, however imperfectly, through the books, films and tabloid ballyhoo point to a pragmatic spirituality of openness, universality and freedom. As the saying goes, we have seen this movie before, and we shall see it again, because India’s greatest export is neither spices nor high-tech entrepreneurs, but its ancient legacy of spiritual genius.

Lady Gaga As Statue Of Liberty On V Magazine’s New York Issue Cover (PHOTO)

Lady Gaga has dressed up as the Statue of Liberty for V Magazine’s New York issue.

Gaga appears with a tuxedo-clad Marc Jacobs on the cover of the magazine in a photo by Mario Testino.

“Just as the Statue of Liberty was France’s gift to America, Gaga is, to us, New York’s greatest gift to pop culture and fashion,” V editor Stephen Gan said in an announcement. “She embodies everything V is about, and is also a beacon of the city’s creativity and hope. Exactly one year after her first V cover (the first fashion magazine cover she was on), we decided to do the NEW YORK issue, and she was the first person who came to mind to represent our great city. In the year that’s passed, she has become a bonafide genius and we can safely declare her our muse. Above all, a New York issue should celebrate people who’ve done great things. We at V are grateful Gaga came along to put the New back in New York!”

The cover hits newsstands today, September 2nd.

Huge Hailstone Falls in South Dakota, Sets New Record

A massive hail stone nearly the size of a volleyball fell in a small South Dakota town this summer, setting the new record for the largest hailstone ever recorded.

The record setting hailstone was discovered in Vivian, measuring 8.0 inches in diameter, 18.625 inches in circumference, and weighing in at an amazing 1.9375 pounds.

This massive hail fell in the town of Vivian, South Daktoa on July 23, 2010. The hail measured over 8 inches in diameter and weighed nearly 2 pounds. Image Source: National Weather Service.

During a particularly violent thunderstorm on July 23, 2010, all of the town’s 55 homes were damaged, and one mobile home received 25 holes in its roof. Vivian, a town of about 110 people, is located 50 miles west of Chamberlain along Interstate 90 in central South Dakota.

The resident who located this stone in his yard quickly placed the hail in his freezer.  However, due to the severity of the storm, the electricity service was lost and the freezer was not powered for over 5 hours following the storm.  The resident who preserved the stone stated he felt it was closer to 10 to 11″ in diameter (rather than the later-measured 8 inches) at the time if fell.

This hail stone shattered the previous record for size.  The former record was a hail stone that measured 7? in diameter and weighed closer to 1.6 pounds.  That stone fell in Aurora, Nebraska on June 22, 2003.  Prior to the Aurora, NE hailstone, the world record hailstone was from Coffeyville, Kansas.

The dynamics of a thunderstorm that is capable of producing such massive hail cannot be understated.  Hail forms as the updraft of a thunderstorm carries water droplets and ice crystals high in the sky.  The moisture is carried so high in the atmosphere that it freezes at high altitudes.  It eventually begins to fall and as it does so, it collects more moisture as it falls through the cloud.  This increases its size by giving it a coating of water.  If the hail stone gets caught up in the uprdraft again, it can make another trip up in the cloud, adding another layer of moisture which again freezes at high altitudes.  As this pattern continues, the hail stone becomes heavier, increasing the liklihood that the stone will fall from the cloud.  But if the updraft is strong enough, the stone may remain in the cloud for many, many cycles.  Initial estimates, based on the size of the stone, indicate that the updraft strength in the Vivian hail storm likely ranged from 160 to 180 miles per hour.

In the days following the storm, the hail stone was sent to the National Center for Atmospheric Research lab in Colorado for full documentation.  They certified the stone as the largest fully-documented hail stone in terms of weight (1.94 pounds) and diameter (8.0 inches).  Plans were made to construct a casting (mold) of the hail stone so that replicas could be displayed at the Historical Museum in Lyman County, South Dakota and at the Aberdeen, South Dakota National Weather Service Office.

Whether or not this is truly the largest hail stone to ever drop in the United States is a question that will remain unanswered.  What we do know is that it is at least the largest documented stone. Chances are a larger stone likely fell sometime in some location in the US but went undetected.

Lee Stranahan: Note to CNN: Hand Jon Stewart the Keys to Your Failing Network

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart is America’s most trusted news anchor and if CNN wants to stay alive, they should put the Emmy winner in charge of their network for a month or so.

Sure, Stewart is comedian but unlike Fox New’s Glenn Beck at least he’s a successful comedian.  And in addition to the fact that CNN’s ratings are a joke, there are solid reasons for giving the comic some sort of guest editor status at the Cable News Network. Stewart is in the line of American comedians like Will Rogers, Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Bill Hicks who used humor to speak truth to power.

In fact, Stewart’s already spoken that truth to CNN, six years ago. Here’s what Stewart said to the hosts of Crossfire about their show and their network in 2004 discussing why they are ‘bad’.

“It’s not so much that it’s bad but it’s hurting America. Stop hurting America. Right now you’re helping the politicians and the corporations. You’re not too rough on them. You arere part of their strategy. You are partisan hacks. I’m here to confront you because we need help from the media and you’re hurting us.”

The audience broke into unscripted applause at that point. They know — hell, we all know — that the weak tea theatrical media is hurting America. We don’t take CNN seriously because it isn’t serious. It’s a puppet show. It’s pro wrestling. It’s the okey-doke.

None of this is a problem for Fox News because despite their smirk and a wink “fair and balanced” BS, we all know what we’re getting when we turn on Fox. It’s intentionally slanted. That is its strength. It’s just unashamedly what it is. Republicans and their media arm Fox News proudly fight to gut Social Security and transfer money from the middle class to the rich by extending the Bush tax cuts. They make no bones about what they are doing.

On the other side, we have gutless cuckolded Democrats who are unwilling to stick their neck out on issues like real financial regulation, single-payer health care or gay-rights. Those issues aren’t that controversial in much of the world but Democrats cower from them and they are aided by a similarly gutless cuckolded media, exemplified by CNN, whose idea of journalistic objectivity is to let partisan mouthpieces bicker between commercial breaks.

We live in an age of the one-sided battle and it’s hurting America. Republicans with no real agenda are poised to win the midterms based solely on aggressive, self-confident bluster. It’s a façade, but that looks like leadership to a lot of people when compared to Democrats who stand for nothing but the faint hope of reelection by being not as bad as the other guys.

The proper role of the news media is to keep people informed about the reality behind media spin and part of the job is to expose both the Democratic and Republican parties for their unique forms of hypocrisy. That’s what The Daily Show does so well and what CNN does so poorly. It’s time to let Stewart and team shake things up in Atlanta. Open minded, smart irreverence would do a much better job of tackling the news.

Take the August slow news month controversy about the “Ground Zero Mosque”. The Daily Show has been absolutely nailing it on the story, including doing the journalistic work of revealing that the supposedly terror funding source behind the Islamic cultural Center is none other than Fox News’s number two shareholder.

Meanwhile, CNN covers Glenn Beck’s rally.

The feeling that The Daily Show fans often have is “why the hell isn’t the real news covering this story this well?” The ‘real’ news media is losing its audience because there’s simply no good answer to that question.

Kim Kardashian: I Don’t Drink, I Would NOT Date Justin Bieber (VIDEO)

Kim Kardashian visited ‘The Tonight Show’ on Tuesday, where she revealed her secret for staying out of trouble.

“I’ve never been a drinker, I’ve never gotten into drugs,” she said. “You know, I think I have such a close family… I think you know my sisters do enough drinking to kind of fill up the whole family.”

Younger sister Khloe was arrested for DUI in 2007. Kim said that her dad, who died in 2003, entrusted her with getting older sister Kourtney home even before she was of legal driving age.

“From a young age, my dad made it very clear that, ‘OK, you’re the responsible one and you have to watch your sister, and taught me how to drive when I was 14 in case my sister or her friends were going to be drinking and I always had permission to drive,” she said.

In Part 2 of the interview Kim addressed the controversy surrounding her remarks that she would date Justin Bieber if he was of legal age.

“I’m almost 30, this is illegal, this is disgusting,” she said. “He’s a cute kid and that’s it.”
