Adrien Field: Attention K-Mart Shoppers

These days it seems the most en vogue thing you can hear is not, “Don’t you love these boots, I bought them at Chanel,” but “You won’t believe where I got this blouse — it’s from Target!”

With that mentality, I went last week to preview a new “design collection” from mass retailer K-Mart. On the cab ride down to the Tribeca studio, I was nothing if not skeptic. The most I was expecting was a good free brunch.

Walking into the clean, minimal studio, I found myself exclaiming, “I can’t believe it’s K-Mart!” as if in a commercial for low-fat butter. Faux fur vests that cost as much as a week’s worth of lattes, treggings (a new term coined for the for the offspring between leggings and trousers), and lace-print T’s that capture this season’s romantic nostalgia were lined up on mannequins that could easily have been purloined fully clothed from the windows of H&M or Zara.

Unlike its competitor Target or “Tar-jay” for the stylishly inclined, K-Mart has never had a fashionable following. No one’s ever said, “K-Marché” when referring to the clothing department or proudly brandished a new purchase at a cocktail party — at least in New York.

Believe it or not, K-Mart has been upping its fashion game for the past five years, you probably just never heard about it. “We didn’t publicize it too much and we got to the point where we wanted to let people know,” said Kathy Huynh, VP of Women’s Apparel Design. “We’re just getting the word out there now. More people are recognizing it.”

With fashion and entertainment more fused together than ever, hunger for style and taste level have risen across every socio-economic level. That mom at home in Wisconsin watching Project Runway or The Rachel Zoe Project is being exposed to fashion through pop culture and suddenly desiring more than just running sneakers and boxy, one-size-fits-all jeans.

Rather than being intimidated by a cropped jacket with epaulet shoulders, they’re looking for it at a price they can afford. “The customer is hungry for affordable, good quality fashion,” Huynh said. “We’re in an age where everything is available online. They know what’s happening already, they just want access to it. They know that military is in. We want to be able to give it to them. “

Budget-conscious fashion has been exploding over the last decade with retailers like H&M, Forever 21, and Zara leading the way, desire, and expectation for high style at low prices. Now with designer collaborations and partnerships, almost everyone can have a pair of Jimmy Choo heels (H&M) or Zac Posen dress (Target) in their wardrobe. Fashion is starting to feel more inclusive, egalitarian, and inviting.

With K-Mart also getting into the game, consumers almost have no choice left but to be stylish.

Little Girl Writes Adorable Letter To Grandpa After Missing Funeral (PICTURE)

Last week we brought you not one, but two hilarious notes written by two of our readers when they were younger. This week, another reader sent us an adorable letter she wrote when she was just 10-years-old. This one caught our eye in particular, not just because it’s a hilarious and sentimental note to her grandpa, but because she wrote it after missing HIS funeral. Heather L. writes:

“Here’s a letter my mother found some years agonthat I wrote at the age of ten to my grandfather, after his death. I remember feeling guilty that I had missed his funeral, so I wanted to send him a letter to ‘make things right.'”

We can’t get enough of these, so please readers, if you any more of you have dug up hilarious things you wrote as a kid,

LAPD declares tactical alert as fires burn in Westlake

Lapd-protest2
Fires were burning on Union Avenue and 6th Street in Westlake on Tuesday night as crowds clashed with Los Angeles Police Department officers.

Hundreds of police, clad in helmets and wielding batons, had responded to the area. Officers formed skirmish lines as protesters scattered in alleys and streets adjacent to 6th Street.

LAPD Officer Karen Rayner said a citywide tactical alert was declared, freeing up more officers to respond to the scene.

She said she had not received any reports on whether people had been arrested or injured.

Protesters were hurling bottles and other objects at officers, who declared an unlawful assembly about 9:30 p.m. The protesters had marched along 6th Street and past Union Avenue, where Manuel Jamines was shot Sunday by officers who say he lunged at them with a 6-inch switchblade and refused commands to drop the weapon.

Police had completely cordoned off 6th Street between Union Lane on the east and Alvarado Street near MacArthur Park on the west. At least two volleys of nonlethal foam projectiles were fired at demonstrators.

HP Sues Ex-CEO Mark Hurd Over New Job At Oracle

SAN FRANCISCO (AP, Jordan Robertson) — Hewlett-Packard Co. is suing former CEO Mark Hurd to stop him from taking a job at rival Oracle Corp.

The complaint filed Tuesday in a California state court comes a day after Oracle hired Hurd as co-president to help lead the database software maker as it tries to muscle in on more of HP’s turf.

The lawsuit shows the growing rancor between the two companies, which are longtime partners that are now competing in the market for computer servers.

HP claims that Hurd wouldn’t be able to perform the job at Oracle without spilling HP’s trade secrets and violating a confidentiality agreement. Hurd signed such an agreement as part of a severance package from HP that could top $40 million.

The lawsuit mentions that Hurd was responsible for preparing HP’s strategic plans and was privy to a “highly confidential” analysis of Oracle’s competitiveness against HP.

Katie Hawkes: How Britney Spears Prepared Me for Grown-Up Life

His name was Adam and I had a major crush on him. I was 11 years old, and I thought the epitome of coolness meant wearing a plaid skort and white knee socks. (It would take me a further two years to grow out of this delusion. I had a blissfully naïve childhood.)

When my style prowess didn’t do much to earn this boy’s attention, I turned to other means to impress him. Case in point: when I overhead him talking about some new singer named Britney Spears and how hot he thought she was, you can bet I bought that album.

It was my first album, in fact. It would soon be followed by treasures such as the soundtracks to Now and Then and My Girl (remember we’re talking about someone who rocked ambiguous clothing items such as skorts).

To be honest, that album – but not the boy, surprisingly enough – still holds a special place in my heart. I think my girl B. Spears really hit the nail on the head with Baby, One More Time. While subsequent albums (and head-shaving choices) may have raised some well-founded concerns about her ability to instruct me in the ways of life, I’m going to propose that her debut album taught me some important lessons about how to navigate the post-college world.

And I elaborate on a few key tracks:

“Baby One More Time”
This absolutely conveys an underlying message about not giving up when cubicle land hates on you. If Britney can get back up and take another hit for the sake of love, you can do it for the sake of a paycheck.

“Sometimes”
Sometimes I run, sometimes I hide. Don’t we all, Britney? I think this track is telling us something crucial about our inner child and unresolved fears. I’m pretty sure this can be solved with a) therapy, b) fudgsicles or c) a round of heartfelt choreography in the privacy of your bedroom. I may or may not speak from experience.

“Soda Pop”
Aside from the obvious message of needing a little reggae in your life, this one’s easy: take care of your bod. Sure, a comfort soda a day might keep the stressors away, but the cavities will be a beast. And besides, the sugary impact on your cardio health might adversely affect your ability to engage in the above-mentioned therapeutic choreography.

“E-mail My Heart”
Apparently, Britney knew way before the rest of us about the impending technological revolution and its impact on dating as we know it. I dare say the creators of eHarmony took some serious notes on this little number. How this applies to my life, I have yet to say. Or admit to.

And there you have it, kids. What, you didn’t gleam such knowledge and wisdom from listening to her album? Maybe you’re not as in-tune with the cosmic pop forces as I am. But please, refrain from turning to “Slave 4 u” or “Toxic” for any legit guidance. I’m just sayin’.

Now you tell me: what artists from your pre-teen collection still speak words of wisdom to your soul?

Christie Brinkley, Peter Cook Narrowly Miss Each Other In Hamptons

Christie Brinkley and ex-husband Peter Cook had a near-miss over Labor Day weekend in the Hamptons, the New York Post’s Page Six reports.

According to the column, Brinkley and Cook both turned up at the Hampton Classic horse event Sunday and narrowly missed being photographed in the same frame:

Christie Brinkley made her way in the direction of ex-husband Peter Cook and his girlfriend Suzanne Shaw. Photographers noticed the two were about to cross paths and aimed to get them in the same frame, but Shaw averted the awkward shot by grabbing Cook, spinning him around and racing in the opposite direction.

Brinkley and Cook have gone through a bitter divorce, fighting over child custody among other issues since they broke up over Cook’s affair with an 18-year-old store clerk.
